In this article I would like to report on success of commercial experiment #1. This programme was initiated with an aim to find ways that could be used to raise and grow capital to invest in start ups. Previously before this initiative, we have discussed with several graduates about difficulties in African countries to find jobs after school, we come to realise a lot of things to be addressed, starting from our education structures to graduate mentality.
A lot of graduates believe that they should be jobs waiting for them after school, they believe that the government should create jobs. But to other hand, we have realised that in developed countries a lot of firms were initiated by the government, innovations and inventions mostly come out of individual enterprise that the government.
After 6 months of discussions, I have decide to take the first step in execution of commercial experiments aimed at growing capital to invest in research and development of new jobs and business. Here is the report of success.
Commercial experiment #1.
Aim: to grow $USD 50 raised through piece jobs into $USD2000 in 6 months time.
Methods:
- Hot culture projects (4000 plants of cabbage).
- Use of Pumhudza programme.
Assumptions:
- Make use of free land and water from the river in the highlands of Chipinge rural areas of Zimbabwe.
Reporting.
One of the issues we discussed in our platforms through WhatsApp groups (Investment projects and Business Minds) is that, there are 9 types of capital in Zimbabwe, among these types include Social and Natural capital. These two can be accessed with little or no financial capital, we assume. So I have decide to vist the highlands of Chipinge with an of creating relations with local farmers, fortunately it was a success, I have managed to convince Moses Munerenyu to create a partnership.
After that, we have discussed about hot culture and the Pumhudza programme, we have managed to do our nursery, 60 grams of cabbage seed.
We have waited 1 month before transplanting our seedlings, it too us 2 weeks to complete the task.
All these experiments were carried out in the river banks due to lack of irrigation systems in our dry land, so we have managed to divert water from the river in the river banks using pipes and small dams.
We have used poles for security fancing and protection of the produce from wild animals and domestic animals.
Challenges and Suggested solutions:
1. Planting methods;
We have realised that transplanting seeds might disturb them and it takes time to transplant a lot of seeds, so in commercial experiment #2 we are not going to make nursery beds, we are going to plant it like maize, two seeds per hole.
2. Fencing security;
Fencing with poles cannot be guaranteed, so we are going to continue to safeguard our projects.
Conclusion;
It seems as if growing cabbage is one of the projects that can be done by graduates to raise and grow capital to invest in growing their businesses or companies after school so as to create jobs.
